Kim Kaster, the owner of Brewed Awakenings Cafe in Saline, believes in giving back to her community and this is evident in her "Pay It Forward" program. On one day each month, she generously designates 20% of cafe sales to a local group or non-profit. If you're thinking "WOW!", yes, so are we!

Yesterday, Hearts in a Box was the honored beneficiary of Pay It Forward Day and we are thrilled to report that it was a great success! HiaB team members were onsite most of the day, welcoming friends, family, and cafe visitors interested in our mission ... and we were AMAZED by the turnout. There were so many people who stopped by to learn more about our organization and we had a blast getting to meet everyone! We even got to FaceTime with Kim's very own soldier, Giancarlo Lopez, direct from Afghanistan where he was recently deployed. That touching moment made us even more resolved to get those boxes out next month!

When it was all said and done, we were proud to learn that we raised $299 and became their biggest Pay It Forward success yet. We already knew that we were "winners" even before the figures were announced, though. Building local relationships with great partners like Brewed Awakenings is priceless to us. Every cup of coffee, sandwich, pastry, or bowl of soup you purchased helped us continue to pay it forward by filling and sending our Hearts and Heroes care packages next month. (And speaking of soup, you all ate A LOT of soup ... it was all gone by 5:30! A very good sign for Pay It Forward Day, but Lobster Bisque, we hardly knew you!!)

For helping us in our mission, for being a warm and friendly place to hang out, and for helping our team "get their pumpkin spice on" all day long ...a huge thank you to Kim, the Brewed Awakenings staff, and all who came out to make their tummies (and us!) happy...THANK YOU!
